Auditions are being Held Today...Apply Within

There’s so many ‘buzz’ words around; when I see or hear them, my little radar is tweaked and it will stop me dead in my tracks. If I’m not consciously aware of my thoughts in the moment, I will get pulled right into the time-sucking abyss of Facebook or Instagram, or I’ll tumble down the rabbit hole of an interesting website, a YouTube video, or a cool Ted Talk. And the next thing I know, an hour of my life just flew by.

While perusing social media recently, I came across this little saying! “Apply within…auditions for the part of YOURSELF are being held today!” YourSELF to me is synonymous with the buzz word ‘Authenticity’. Everyone else is already taken, so just be who you are!

A lot of us seem to be striving to be something we think we’re not! Why is that? The ‘self-help’ industry has been getting a bit of a bad rap over the past few years and rightfully so. The very fact that we think we need help, implies that we aren’t good enough without it or as we are already.

And speaking of not feeling good enough, I have a problem with another buzz word. That word is ‘potential’. It piggybacks onto my original point about the self-help industry in that it implies you aren’t good enough because you haven’t reached your ‘full potential’...yet! But who’s measuring? Who has the full potential barometer? How would we know when we’ve reached it anyway? Do we ever reach our full potential or are we just always striving?

I don’t really believe in the whole potential thing! To me, the journey of life is more about being the best version of ourselves; about being perfectly imperfect in whatever way that shows up for each of us. My belief is that it’s truly about being authentically yourSELF no matter what other people think, say or do. It’s about being able to be with yourself and loving yourself for the person you are; the person who looks back at you in the mirror. I think it’s being happy with the reflection you see, and embracing everything about him or her…imperfections and all. It’s embracing that person with all her flaws and idiosyncrasies simply because she is YOU.
